Lucie Renard —
Teaching with themes makes learning meaningful, creative, and memorable. Whether it’s working on math problems during Pizza Party Day or analyzing poetry in Escape the Poet’s Study, themed widgets connect learning to real-world contexts and events.
In this post, I’ll walk you through some of the excellent lesson examples I gathered—organized by theme and subject—and show how you can use them or recreate them in your own classroom.
All of these creative themed classroom activities are created with BookWidgets, a content creation and student learning evaluation tool for teachers. You can make a free copy of the lessons by creating a free BookWidgets account and navigating to this BookWidgets group folder, where you can find all. You can duplicate the activities, make changes (such as language, instructions, or settings) as needed, and share them with your students. When your students complete the activities, you will also receive the results and be able to provide feedback.
Here's a content table. Click the titles to jump to that part. Make sure to read all the way through as we explain how you can share these lessons with your students, or make edits when needed!

Before you jump in, it's worth reflecting on why we build and teach thematic lessons in the first place.

What Is the Purpose of a Thematic Lesson?
Thematic teaching helps students engage with content in a story-driven, context-rich environment. Here’s why it works:
- Problem-solving skills: Students solve real or imaginary challenges within a themed story.
- Reading comprehension: They must understand and analyze the context to succeed.
- Practice and review: Themes make repetition and testing more interactive and fun.
- Connection to current events: Topics like sustainability or cultural celebrations spark meaningful discussions.
- Enrichment: Perfect for differentiation and extending learning for gifted students.
